2011 – 2012 Season Opens Friday, September 16th

September 14th, 2011

The Players Club of Swarthmore is proud to be opening our 101st season with Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, Our Town, starting on Friday, September 16th.

Many think of it as a nostalgia piece, since it’s set in a small town at the turn of the last century. But Wilder himself was trying to create a deeper experience, and explained his intentions in his preface to the play: “Our Town is not offered as a picture of life in a New Hampshire village; or as a speculation of conditions of life after death.   It is an attempt to find a value above all price for smaller events in our daily life…I have set a small village against the largest dimensions of time and place.”

Director Ellen Wilson Dilks of Media was drawn to the play’s beautifully simple storytelling, as well as Wilder’s innovative approach (for 1938). “The actors are very aware that it’s a play-and they let the audience know it. The 4th wall is broken constantly, something that hadn’t really been done prior to this play. As I explored the piece more, I started to feel like the whole thing is a rehearsal that Wilder is letting the audience peek in on” The design team, which includes Jeff Gallagher’s lights, Betsy Berwick’s costumes and Davida Weiler-Stone’s soundscape, has worked with her to honor Wilder’s vision of minimalistic staging. The play is written to be performed on a bare stage, so Ms. Dilks, Dave Campbell and Mike Bloh have created a streamlined set that will be visually pleasing yet maintain the sense of openness Wilder wanted.
