2018 New Play Festival – Submissions

February 15th, 2018

Coordinated by: Michael Steven Schultz

In July 2018, the Players Club will again provide a space for some New Plays to be heard. Up to four plays will be selected, and each will be given a single-night reading, to allow the playwright to hear his/her work and take their play to the next level. We invite our PCS community to come discover new work, and participate in sharing your responses with the artists.

  • We are now accepting submissions for plays for the July 2018 Festival. Deadline for submissions will be April 15, 2018.
  • Non-Musical Plays are all types may be submitted but preference will be given based on several parameters:
    • Preference will be given to full-length plays, at least 90 minutes in projected length. (Plays that will run over 2.5 hours will probably not be chosen). We prefer to not select one-acts – however if we find two one-acts that are excellent, and they are better than most submissions, we will consider doing them as a single performance
    • Preference will be given to plays with casts of less than 10 people, to ensure we can cast them
    • Preference will be given to playwrights in the local geographic region – as far North as New York City, as far South as Baltimore, as far West as Pittsburgh and as far East as the Jersey Shore. We would like playwrights who can come participate in the process and be there for the performances.
    • Preference will be given to plays that have reached their first draft in the last two years – we would like this experience to help a playwright to find improvements in a still-developing piece, rather than stage a piece that has been “finished” for a long time.
    • The above are preferences, not rules; these are the criteria that will guide our selection process
  • Each play will receive a single staged reading the weekend of July 20-22.
    • We will assign a director from our community
    • The director will assemble a cast with our assistance and advice
    • There will be 4-6 rehearsals, at the director’s discretion
    • Lighting will be kept as minimal as possible, as well as sound
    • Most stage directions will be read by a narrator
    • There will be a talkback following each reading
  • Submissions should be in PDF format, if possible
  • Please send questions and submissions to pcsplayfest2018@pcstheater.org
