The Players Club of Swarthmore’s January, 2013 production will be PERMANENT COLLECTION by local playwright Thomas Gibbons. Inspired by the Barnes Foundation debacle, the play is a searing examination of racial politics. Two men face off over how much space—figuratively and literally—the white world gives to African-Americans.

Auditions will be held on Monday, August 27th @ 7pm. Please come with a 3 minute prepared contemporary monologue. Auditionees will be seen on a first-come, first served basis.

Callbacks will be held on Wednesday, September 5th.

Production dates are Jan. 4, 5, 6 (matinee), 10, 11, 12, 13 (matinee), 17, 18, 19 & 20

Rehearsals will start in mid-October: 2 weeknights and Sunday afternoons.

A non-printable PDF of approx. 75% of the script is available upon request.

Any questions, please contact the director @ dilksew714@comcast.net.

Director Ellen Wilson Dilks seeks the following:

Sterling North (Male, 45—60, African American): North is the newly appointed director of the Morris Foundation. He is articulate, sophisticated, smart and a savvy businessman; but the cost of getting ahead in the white world has given him a sharp edge—and a chip on his shoulder.

Paul Barrow (Male, 40—55, White): Barrow is the long-time Educational Director at the Foundation. He is passionate about art—and about the Foundation’s mission. He is a caring man who gets caught up in something he never expected.

Ella Franklin (Female, 60—75, African America): Ella has served as assistant to both Dr. Morris and his immediate successor; she is the history of the Foundation. A warm, friendly and very competent woman, she suddenly finds herself relegated to the sidelines when North takes command.

Alfred Morris (Male, 50—65, White): Morris is actually a ghost—he is a presence throughout the unfolding of the story. He was a brash businessman who gained incredible wealth. He does have one great monologue, however.

Kanika Weaver (Female, 25—35, African-American): Kanika is Sterling North’s assistant. She becomes friendly with Paul upon arriving at the Foundation. A bright young woman who cannot relate to the struggles of the Civil Rights Era—and its toal on her elders—she subsequently becomes collateral damage in the ensuing confrontations.

Gillian Crane (F, 30—40, White): Gillian is a reporter for a local newspaper; it is her digging into the Foundation’s recent changes that sets the chain of events in motion. A reporter with a nose for a story, she doesn’t seem to regret the damage she causes to Paul’s life or Kanika’s.

There are also 3 voice overs needed: an African-American woman [any age], a caller to a radio show [any age & gender] and the radio host [any age & gender].

A non-printable PDF of approx. 75% of the script is available upon request.

This is a non-union, non-paying theatre. All roles are unpaid.

Dear Friends of the Players Club of Swarthmore,

Saturday, June 9th 2012 will be our Summer Work Day. We will have some goodies to munch on and some liquids to imbibe. I think we may even scratch up some lunch. Feel free to bring your favorite goodies.

We will be cleaning up and throwing out around the shop and theater in general.

We need to do a bit of gardening here and there so bring a pruner or two and have at it.

As part of our tradition, we will be working on the sheds. Organizing the sheds, especially Shed 1, is a task that helps set us up for the new season. We may also be able to finally get all the shed doors up to snuff. Door 1 needs some rework and more paint. Door 2 needs to be replaced. Door 3 needs another coat of paint.

If you know of other jobs that need to be done let us know so we can get any materials we might need.

Hopefully we can coordinate with the costume clean out as many hands make a festive day.

Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim Reese

Character Descriptions:

Princess Winnifred – Strong & assertive woman who’s a little rough around the edges. She is free-willed and unrestrained by conventions of how to behave. This is the role that made Carol Burnett famous! Requires excellent comedic timing. (Mezzo/Belter)

Prince Dauntless – A young, meek prince who is a real “mama’s boy.” Through the course of the story Dauntless grows from being very much a boy to being a man ready to become a king. (Baritone)

Queen Aggravain – The queen is a loud and abrasive ruler; overbearing mother who decrees no one is good enough to wed her son. Stereotypical “mama.” (Mezzo/Alto)

King Sextimus – A kind, expressive and playful man who is mute; he likes to chase girls through the corridors of the castle. Must be an excellent physical actor! (Non-singing role)

Jester – The court clown: an energetic and peppy man who is the King’s right-hand man and assists him with every endeavor. This role could possibly be played by a female. Physical acting/dance skills a must! (Tenor/ Baritone)

Minstrel – The Minstrel has duel roles of being the narrator but also being part of the story. This role could possibly be played by a woman. (Tenor)

Sir Harry – Dashing, handsome and gallant a la Disney Prince. (Tenor/ Baritone)

Lady Larken – Ingénue (think Disney Princess.) (Soprano)

Wizard – The queen’s henchman. He is an annoying, sniveling swine. He has a flare for the dramatic and laments his days gone by as a performer. (Baritone)

Princess No. 12 – comedic cameo.

Nightingale of Samarkand – soprano cameo.

Sir Studley – supporting.

Lady Mabelle – supporting. French accent.

Lady Rowena – supporting.

Lady Merril – supporting.

Lady Lucille – supporting.

Ladies-in-Waiting & Knights – ensemble with lots of singing and dancing.

Children’s Chorus – 6 animated & energetic children who assist the Minstrel in storytelling.

Auditions for A Perfect Ganesh

by Terrence McNally

directed by George Mulford

Auditions: Wednesday, September 5, 7:00 p.m.

Callbacks: Thursday, September 13

Production Dates: November 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 23, 24

Roles: two women, two men. Both women are old enough to have a grown son. The man plays young enough to be their son and old enough to be their husband.

Margaret: handsome, in charge but not noisy.

Katherine: an enthusiast, loses things. The contrast between the two women is a source of friction, but also of affection and, of course, comedy.

Man: someone different in each scene. Ability to do an East Asian accent might be a plus.

Ganesh: a Hindu god with an elephant’s head. His dominant mood is happy bordering on giddy, but he also has a lot of story-telling and moments of great dignity.

This is a Second Stage production with a short rehearsal span; actors must get out of book quickly, on their own. Auditions are cold readings from the script. Your questions are welcome; contact the director at Mulford@udel.edu.

Show Dates: September 14- 29, 2012

Rehearsals: Will begin in July. Schedule is flexible and can be worked around actors’ availability to a certain extent. Daytime rehearsals may be scheduled for teenagers who are out of school. No weekend rehearsals in July and August.

Character Descriptions:

Eugene Jerome (almost 15 yrs) – Narrates the play; a teenage boy who has recently discovered girls in a BIG way. He is obsessed both with the female anatomy, which he’s never seen, and his other love, baseball. He sees himself as a writer, and keeps a detailed journal of his family’s eccentricities. Eugene spars verbally with his mother, adores father and his brother (when he doesn’t hate him), and lusts after his curvy cousin.

Stan Jerome (18) – Eugene’s older brother. Works in a hat factory job, which he hates. He tries to temper Eugene’s passions while attempting to please his parents, but he struggles with feelings of being trapped.

Jack Jerome (42) – father of the Jerome family who feels the pressure of supporting an extended family by working two jobs. In addition, all family members turn to him for advice and answers. He is patient, wise and very weary.

Kate Jerome (40) – Eugene’s mother; strong Jewish matriarch who holds the family together and solves the hurts and problems of all of them. She is opinionated (even prejudiced) and very verbal, yet very loving. Kate knows how to yell; usually at Eugene.

Blanche Morton (38) – Eugene’s aunt; Kate’s younger sister. An attractive widow with two teenage girls, she is very indecisive and financially dependent. She wants to have a life for her and her daughters, but she is overwhelmed by the prospect.

Nora Morton (16) – Blanche’s older daughter, and Eugene’s cousin. She is a beautiful and ambitious girl with potential of becoming a Broadway dancer. She resents her younger sister who is pampered due to a heart condition. In addition, she is angry at her father for dying and leaving her with a weak mother.

Laurie Morton (13) – Nora’s younger sister. She is a sickly, smart, and clever girl who is all ears around the adult situations. She appears innocent, but she understands what others around her are “up to.”
