I Love You Because: Note from the Director

February 8th, 2016

Director of I Love You Because, Anne Marie Scalies

Valentine’s Day is for lovers. That was especially the case for me February 14, 2006, when I attended the Opening Night of the Off-Broadway hit I Love You Because at Village Theatre. I have been a lover of musical theatre for over 30 years, and there I was attending my first NYC Opening Night of a musical written by someone I call my friend. I met Ryan Cunningham (Book/Lyrics) in my early twenties when he was a Notre Dame classmate of my lifelong friend, Brian Seaman (Set Designer). Brian hosted an annual four-day party at his parents’ house in Ocean City, NJ, bringing together a dozen friends from The Fighting Irish and Upper Darby Summer Stage to drink, kayak, catch some rays, and be single! “Yakfest” memories have been with me every step of this rehearsal process.

Spanning those years, we watched many life changes amongst each other as well as dreams fulfilled. As I went through the rehearsal process I was continually reminded of the ever-changing life cycle that was always well represented at “Yakfest.” Relationships, break-ups, rebounds, employment, educational advancement, travel, home ownerships, marriages, and now babies! I Love You Because represents our early years of relationships and self-discovery. A time in my life that I wouldn’t trade for the world.

On Feb 12th, my dream of directing this show for the past 10 years is fulfilled. I thank PCS for giving me the opportunity and to Ryan Cunningham and Joshua Salzman for writing such a quirky slice of life for us to enjoy. The cast and creative team have collaborated together to present this production to you. I couldn’t ask for a better way to celebrate love than at the theatre!

I challenge you to go up to someone and complete this phrase, ‘I Love You Because_______”

Thank you for following us along on our journey. We hope to see you during our run. A very rare treat on February 25th, we will have Ryan Cunningham in the audience as well as partake in a live Q&A after

Fun Fact: Fun Fact: Anne Marie Scalies has a witty blog chronicling her weight loss journey. Take a gander! mybyebyebellyblog.blogspot.com
